Essie Fogarty

Essie Fogarty (nee Doyle) of Rathdrum, and formerly of Rathnew in County Wicklow, Ireland, was a lifelong Gaelic Athletic Association volunteer whose quiet work behind the scenes helped sustain two of Wicklow's best loved clubs. She was not a public official or a professional athlete, but in the judgement of Rathnew GAA and Avondale Camogie Club she was one of the people who keep community sport alive: making sandwiches and tea, selling lotto tickets, travelling to underage and senior matches, singing on the buses, and standing on the sidelines through every season.

Fogarty died peacefully on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, at St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin, with her family beside her. The Irish Independent reported that she had been living with illness in her final months, yet she still travelled to Aughrim to watch her nephew Eoin captain the senior team in the championships. Her age at death has not been published. News of her passing prompted tributes across Wicklow GAA, which described the loss as the end of an era for the clubs she served.

For many years she was a huge part of Rathnew GAA Club, travelling the length and breadth of the county and country to attend games from underage level through to the senior ranks. Rathnew called her one of its great characters and most loyal supporters, saying that although she made Rathdrum her home, "the Rathnew blood never left her." One of her proudest moments, the club recalled, came roughly 25 years before her death, when she watched nephews Trevor and Mark Doyle win the Leinster Club Championship with Rathnew and saw Trevor lift the cup. Closer to home she was also heavily involved with Avondale Camogie Club in Rathdrum, which remembered her as a familiar and much loved face on the sidelines who encouraged players and shared in the joy of the club.

Her life was also marked by deep personal loss. In 2004 her 21-year-old son Shane died suddenly. More than 2,000 people attended his funeral, and he was honoured with a guard of honour of more than 60 players from Rathnew and Avondale. In the wake of that tragedy Essie fundraised to donate a defibrillator to each of those clubs in Shane's memory. She was also predeceased by her husband Seamus, her parents Ned and Nan Doyle, and three siblings, Mikey, Ann and Robert. She is mourned by her children Nicola and Eamonn, granddaughter Aine, brothers Eamonn and Sean, many sisters, and the wider Doyle and Fogarty families.

Funeral arrangements reflected how tightly her life was woven into club and parish. Her remains reposed at the family home at 47 Parnell Park, Rathdrum, on Friday, 18 September 2026. On Saturday, 19 September, the cortege was to arrive at Rathnew GAA Grounds at 10.30am and proceed at walking pace to St Joseph's Church, Rathnew, for an 11am funeral Mass, followed by burial in Rathdrum Cemetery. Wicklow's GAA community remembered her not for fame, but for decades of presence, kindness and unwavering support.
