Hans Johann Georg Traxler was born on 21 May 1929 in Herrlich (today Hrdlovka) in North Bohemia to Austrian parents; his father worked as a rural gendarme and the boy grew up on a farm in Sangerberg. He wanted to draw from age nine and grew up with Wilhelm Busch picture volumes. War ruptured the childhood. At fourteen he was sent to a German Wehrertüchtigungslager; in 1944 he volunteered for signals troops to avoid front-line combat; in spring 1945 he fled over the Erzgebirge into Saxony. With his mother he reached Regensburg, where she died soon after; his father died the same year in a prisoner camp. At sixteen Traxler was a full orphan. A Catholic priest's refusal to give his mother last rites because dinner mattered more, a story Traxler later told more than once, left a lasting mark on his view of piety and power.
He sold a first drawing to a Munich illustrated paper at seventeen. In 1951 he moved to Frankfurt am Main, worked briefly as a cartoonist for future Pardon publisher Hans A. Nikel, then studied free painting and lithography at the Städelschule from 1954 under teachers including Georg Meistermann. Through cartooning he met Chlodwig Poth and the circle that would become the Neue Frankfurter Schule, among them Robert Gernhardt, F. K. Waechter, F. W. Bernstein, Bernd Eilert, and Pit Knorr. From 1962 he wrote and drew for Pardon. His first book, Die Wahrheit über Hänsel und Gretel (1963), published under the pseudonym Georg Ossegg, pretended to document archaeological proof of the Grimm fairy-tale witch's gingerbread house. The mockumentary became a longseller (fairy-tale scholar Heinz Rölleke later called it one of the best research parodies of its kind) and briefly drew a fraud investigation, which only burnished the joke.
Disputes with Nikel in the 1970s pushed the group out of Pardon. In 1979 Traxler co-founded the satire magazine Titanic, which became the house organ of the Neue Frankfurter Schule. A half-sentence calling Kohl "birnenförmig" in a Titanic column by Bernd Eilert sparked Traxler's partnership with Pit Knorr on the "Birne" caricature of Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Birne. Das Buch zum Kanzler (1982/1983) and follow-ups such as flip-book gags fixed pear-Kohl in West German visual memory; Frankfurt mayor Mike Josef later called it an iconic visual language for the Federal Republic's collective memory. Traxler also drew the trench-coated elk that illustrated F. W. Bernstein's couplet "Die schärfsten Kritiker der Elche / waren früher selber welche," later realized as the bronze elk outside the Caricatura Museum.
From about 1980 he ran series in Zeit-Magazin and contributed to the FAZ, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and others. Roughly thirty percent of his work, he said, was political caricature; the rest was illustration, children's books, and nonsense cartoons. Aus dem Leben der Gummibärchen (1992) made him the first German cartoonist placed on the U.S. cartoon market under the English title The Life and the Times of the Gummy Bear. He illustrated Goethe, Heine, Morgenstern, Twain, Tucholsky, and children's classics with Peter Härtling, and wrote dozens of picture books from Es war einmal ein Mann (1979) through late Ammersee-tinged titles. In 2005 he gave Frankfurt the "ICH-Denkmal" on the Main riverbank: an empty sandstone plinth inviting anyone to stand as their own monument under the motto that every person is unique. The Caricatura Museum holds about 3,700 of his works; a 2019 retrospective marked his ninetieth birthday.
Honours included the Binding-Kulturpreis (2003), Göttinger Elch (2006), Deutscher Karikaturenpreis lifetime award (2007), Ludwig-Emil-Grimm-Preis (2012), Goetheplakette der Stadt Frankfurt (2014), Wilhelm-Busch-Preis (2015), Sondermann-Preis (2017), and Friedrich-Stoltze-Preis (2018). He kept publishing into his mid-nineties: Mama, warum bin ich kein Huhn? (2019) mined childhood; Wie die Malerei verschwand (2024) satirized the art academy; 2025 brought Ode an den Ammersee and Die Bildergedichte. To hr at ninety he said there is always an unfinished book, so he forced himself to keep working. He died in Frankfurt am Main on 24 August 2026, aged 97. The city and Caricatura announced the death on 26 August at the family's request. Cause of death and resting place were not made public. Hesse minister-president Boris Rhein, mayor Mike Josef, Caricatura director Martin Sonntag, and Neue Frankfurter Schule colleagues including Pit Knorr, Bernd Eilert, Mehrdad Zaeri, and Flix paid tribute. The bronze elk outside Caricatura wore mourning crepe.
