My sister called me about this from Oregon, said the whole township's in shock. Didn't know him personally but she said he was the kind of sergeant who'd actually stop and talk to people on his rounds. Strange to hear this kind of news on a phone call from so far away.

Jacob Roesler was an American police officer, a sergeant with the Clay Township Police Department in Ottawa County, Ohio, who was killed in a crash on the morning of 16 October 2026 while responding to a call. He was 26 years old and had served with the department for three years.
Jacob Patrick Roesler was born on 2 June 2000 and grew up in Monclova, Ohio, near Toledo. He graduated from Anthony Wayne High School in 2019 and then trained at the Owens Community College Police Academy, completing it in 2023.
He joined the Clay Township Police Department the same year and had recently been promoted to sergeant. His family said he was living his dream job, working alongside his best friend, Chief Martin. He received the Chief's Award for Meritorious Conduct for service and bravery. Outside work he loved his family, his friends and his dog, Gus, and spent his spare time welding in the garage, working on his cars, fishing on the Maumee River or sitting in a deer stand.
At about 6:37 a.m. on Friday 16 October 2026, Sergeant Roesler was driving south on State Route 51 in a Ford Explorer police cruiser, with his emergency lights on, to answer a report of another crash. As he entered the intersection with State Route 795, about two miles outside Millbury, his cruiser was struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe. Both vehicles left the road; the cruiser hit a metal pole and the Tahoe hit a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, a 41-year-old man from Perrysburg, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The Ohio State Highway Patrol's Sandusky Post is investigating, and no charges had been announced.
Governor Mike DeWine ordered flags to fly at half-staff across Ottawa County and at the Ohio Statehouse until sunset on the day of his funeral. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said he had served the Clay Township community honorably and with unwavering dedication, and police departments, sheriff's offices and churches across north-west Ohio sent their condolences. A visitation was arranged for 21 October at Walter Funeral Home in Toledo and a funeral service for 22 October 2026 at the Liberty Aviation Museum in Port Clinton.
He is survived by his mother, Lori Roesler, his father, Chip Roesler, his sister, Samantha Wyckhouse, and his grandmothers, Kathy Roman and Sue Roesler.

In their own words
“Sgt. Roesler served the Clay Township community honorably and with an unwavering dedication throughout his three years with the department.”
Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson, statement, 16 October 2026

Same, heard it from my mom. Small towns feel it different.
