Júlio Duarte Langa was a Mozambican Catholic bishop who led the Diocese of Xai-Xai for 28 years, through the long civil war that followed independence, and who in 2015 became only the second Mozambican ever made a cardinal. He was also known for his command of local languages, which he put to use in translating the texts of the Second Vatican Council into the main languages of Mozambique.

He was born on 27 October 1927 in Mangunze, in Gaza Province, in what was then Portuguese Mozambique. After the local school he entered the seminary at Magude and then studied at the seminary of Namaacha in the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques, the colonial name for Maputo. He was ordained a priest of that archdiocese on 9 June 1957.

On 31 May 1976, the year after independence, Pope Paul VI named him bishop of João Belo, a diocese created in 1970. Weeks later the diocese and its seat were renamed Xai-Xai, and when he was consecrated on 24 October 1976 by Archbishop Alexandre José Maria dos Santos he became Bishop of Xai-Xai. His years in office coincided with war, social upheaval and the work of rebuilding church life, and he paid particular attention to communities hit by the conflict and by epidemics and natural disasters. Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation on 12 July 2004.

He remained close to the diocese in retirement and was regarded as a figure of simplicity and pastoral presence. In January 2015 Pope Francis announced that he would make him a cardinal, one of five men over 80 chosen for their pastoral charity rather than to vote in a conclave. On 14 February 2015 he received the red hat, with the titular church of San Gabriele dell'Addolorata in Rome. He followed Alexandre dos Santos, the prelate who had consecrated him, as the second Mozambican cardinal.

Cardinal Langa died on 3 August 2026 at Maputo Central Hospital, aged 98, after a long illness. Archbishop Francisco Chimoio, apostolic administrator of Xai-Xai, said his kidneys had stopped working before doctors had time to treat him. Pope Leo XIV sent a telegram praising his simplicity, zeal and perseverance and the way he proclaimed the gospel of peace and reconciliation among all Mozambicans. After funeral Masses in Maputo and Xai-Xai he was to be buried in the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes at Xonguene.

My mom clipped out the paper in 2015 when he was made cardinal, she kept a little file of Catholic news from countries most people couldn't find on a map. She said a 98 year old bishop who lived through a whole civil war and still talked about peace and reconciliation was the kind of story that never makes the evening news here. 98 years old. That's a whole century of history in one man.

On 1 October 1976 the diocese was renamed the Diocese of Xai-Xai, so that when he was consecrated a bishop on 24 October 1976 by Archbishop Alexandre José Maria dos Santos of Lourenço Marques, he became Bishop of Xai-Xai. His episcopal motto was In finem dilexit eos, meaning he loved them to the end.

He led the diocese for 28 years, a period that included the Mozambican civil war, social upheaval and the difficult task of pastoral reconstruction. He promoted the pastoral life of the diocese and paid special attention to communities affected by the conflict, by epidemics and by natural disasters. A deep connoisseur of local languages, he took part in translating the texts of the Second Vatican Council into the main languages of Mozambique, helping spread them among the country's Catholic communities.

Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation on 12 July 2004. On 4 January 2015 Pope Francis announced that he would make Langa a cardinal, one of five new cardinals over the age of 80 whom the Pope said were distinguished for their pastoral charity. At the consistory on 14 February 2015 he became Cardinal-Priest of the titular church of San Gabriele dell'Addolorata. Because of his age he was never eligible to vote in a papal conclave. He was the second member of the College of Cardinals born in Mozambique, after Alexandre José Maria dos Santos.

Personal life

After his retirement Langa remained closely connected to the Diocese of Xai-Xai, where he continued to be regarded as a respected figure known for his simplicity, pastoral presence and fidelity to the gospel. He had been ill for a long time; Archbishop Francisco Chimoio, the apostolic administrator of Xai-Xai, told Vatican Radio that both of the cardinal's kidneys had stopped working and that there was no time for the treatment doctors had planned.

On 5 August Pope Leo XIV sent a telegram of condolence to Archbishop Chimoio, praising the cardinal for devoting himself with simplicity, zeal and perseverance to his flock and for proclaiming the gospel of peace and reconciliation for a future of fraternity among all Mozambicans.

The funeral rites were announced to begin on 6 August with a Mass at Maputo Cathedral, after which his body was to be taken to Xai-Xai for further celebrations. On 8 August his body was to be taken to the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes at Xonguene for a Mass and burial inside the shrine. Legacy

His work on translating the documents of the Second Vatican Council into Mozambican languages helped bring them to ordinary Catholics in their own tongues. His elevation to cardinal in 2015 was seen as a historic moment for the Church in Mozambique, and Pope Leo XIV recalled him as a distinguished shepherd who preached peace and reconciliation.
