Called my mom in Akron and she already knew. Said Marilyn Slaby held that same House seat her own husband once had, appointed twice to it. 86 years old, my mom just kept saying that number.

Marilyn Slaby was an Ohio teacher, small business owner and Republican politician who represented part of Summit County in the Ohio House of Representatives in 2004 and again from 2012 to 2018. She died on 22 October 2026, aged 86.
Born Marilyn Ruth Stanford in Akron on 19 November 1939, she grew up in Cuyahoga Falls and graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School before earning a bachelor's degree in education at Heidelberg College. She taught at elementary schools in Cuyahoga Falls, Northampton and Bath, and also taught swimming and preschool at the Cuyahoga Falls YMCA. Later she opened her own business, The Yarn Shop.
Active in local Republican politics, she served for about a decade on the Summit County Board of Elections, was vice chair of the Summit County Republican Central Committee and was elected to the Republican State Central Committee. In March 2004 she was appointed to the Ohio House seat left vacant when Bryan C. Williams resigned, but she lost the November election that year to Democrat Brian Williams by fewer than 300 votes.
Her husband, Lynn Slaby, won the same seat in 2010. When Governor John Kasich appointed him to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio in 2012, Marilyn Slaby was appointed to succeed him and was sworn in on 24 April 2012. After redistricting she won the renumbered 38th District that November, and she was re-elected in 2014 and 2016. She sat on committees dealing with economic and small business development, health and aging, and insurance, and compiled a consistently conservative record on taxes, gun rights and abortion. She withdrew from the 2018 race and left office at the end of that year.
Slaby married Lynn Slaby on 23 June 1962, and they were married for 64 years. They had three children and six grandchildren. A woman of faith, she sang in the choir, played handbells and taught Sunday school at High Street Christian Church, and she was a devoted knitter who made prayer blankets for the homebound. In later years she lived in Punta Gorda, Florida.
She died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on 22 October 2026. Her daughter Marilynn Willkom told the Akron Beacon Journal that her mother touched countless lives as a teacher, entrepreneur, state representative and woman of deep faith, but that family was her greatest joy.

Crazy how these small county names stick with people for decades.
