I remember that I wasn't really much surprised or shocked. It was my sister who was speechless, so I decided to speak to the doctor about it by myself and he mentioned to me that my life expectancy is one year.

His faith through the illness showed me something about holding on and letting go at the same time. What a witness he was.

Watched Survivor PH back in the day and never realized until years later how much the craft mattered. Rest easy, Direk.

Monti brought such gentleness to sets full of pressure and chaos. I think of him whenever I remember that kindness and craft are not opposites. Thank you for showing us that, Direk.

A director who made space for stories most people wouldn't touch, then turned around and mentored the next wave. The man basically said 'loving fully and feeling everything' while fighting stage 4. Pretty hard to argue with that philosophy.

Early life

Edgardo Puno Parungao III was born on 1967-10-14. In a Facebook life-and-career reflection later summarized by GMA News, he said he was born in Cubao, studied in Malabon until he became a young man, moved from place to place, and attended three colleges. He later returned to Cubao after working and living abroad in Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Public English-language obituaries do not detail parents' names or a full childhood narrative beyond those self-statements.

The legal name Edgardo Puno Parungao III appears in the family statement posted by his brother Hardy Parungao and quoted by Manila Times, GMA, PEP, and SunStar. Industry and press used Monti Parungao, Monti Puno Parungao, and the nickname Direk Monti. (Sources: GMA News "5 things"; Hardy Parungao family statement.)

Education

Parungao described attending three colleges after schooling connected to Malabon. His LinkedIn profile lists Communication Arts at Maryknoll College Foundation, Inc. He later appeared as part-time faculty at iACADEMY in Makati, a computing, business, and creative school, consistent with a career that mixed practice and mentoring. Exact graduation years for the three colleges are not stated in the major death…

Film, TV, and music-video career

He began at GMA Network in 1987 and built a multi-station path through television, advertising, theater, events, writing, production, editing, and directing. LinkedIn places him as in-house director at Unitel Production (about 1998-2005), TV director at GMA, TV director at TV5 (about 2011-2015), and later again at GMA as drama director. Breakthrough mainstream visibility came directing Survivor Philippines seasons 1-3…

Personal life

Brother Hardy Parungao publicly announced the death and is the family voice cited by Manila Times and GMA. Monti's October 2025 vlog refers to a sister who was speechless when doctors explained prognosis; her given name is not published in the major obituaries reviewed. In February 2026 he addressed an open letter to supporters and to Audrey, calling her the…

Beliefs and views

Public statements during illness emphasize gratitude, fear without false bravado, and faith. Before February 2026 surgery he wrote that he was holding on to God and to hope for more present time, and that loving fully and feeling everything would have to be enough. In the October 2025 vlog he said he would still be grateful even if bucket-list trips…

Legacy and impact

Parungao leaves a bridge between Philippine network television and LGBTQ indie film. Reality audiences remember Survivor Philippines and StarStruck; drama audiences remember long-running Kapuso titles; queer film history remembers the late-2000s and early-2010s BL cluster that traveled as far as Turin. Music-video and commercial craft widened his reach to pop audiences who may never have known the director's name. His…

Awards and honours

Individual personal award lists are thin in English obituaries. Documented program-level recognition tied to his work includes Asian Academy Creative Awards 2021 wins for The Lost Recipe (Best Visual or Special FX; Best Editing), a series EN Wikipedia credits him with directing. Survivor Philippines as a franchise won multiple Philippine TV awards during and after the seasons he directed (PMPC,…

Controversies

No major personal scandal is documented in the September 2026 obituaries and career roundups reviewed for this profile. His BL films existed inside a Philippine media climate that sometimes stigmatizes queer content, but press frames those titles as career signatures rather than controversy flashpoints. Illness-related fundraising posts are appeals, not controversies. Nothing further is added here without a citation. (Sources:…

Illness and death

Diagnosed with colon cancer on or about 2024-10-12 (Bandera; PEP), later described in press as stage 4. He discussed prognosis and gratitude in an October 2025 vlog (quotes widely reprinted). A January 2025 Instagram fundraising reel, an April 2025 Anna Ylagan Facebook appeal for surgery funds, and ongoing surgeries including a February 2026 admission preceded by his open letter, marked the public course of the illness.

He died Tuesday morning, 2026-09-01, at home in Quezon City, age 58, according to brother Hardy Parungao, after several recent surgeries. The family statement promised celebration-of-life details later. As of research on 2026-09-08, major outlets still reported wake and funeral details as not yet announced. (Sources: Manila Times; PEP; SunStar; Bandera; GMA.)
