Edgardo Puno Parungao III, known to Philippine show business as Monti Parungao or Direk Monti, was a Filipino film and television director whose career stretched from late-1980s network floors to indie BL features, reality franchises, and 2020s Kapuso dramas. He was born on 1967-10-14. In a life-and-career post later quoted by GMA News, he said he was born in Cubao, studied in Malabon until he was a young man, moved around, and attended three colleges. LinkedIn lists Communication Arts study at Maryknoll College Foundation. He wrote that he started at GMA 7 in 1987 and worked across television stations in advertising, theater, events, writing, production, editing, and directing. He also worked and lived for periods in Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand before returning to Cubao.
By the mid-2000s he was an established multi-hyphenate. He served as in-house director at Unitel Production, freelanced and staffed at GMA, and later directed at TV5 (about 2011-2015 per LinkedIn) before returning to Kapuso drama and reality. Colleagues remembered a light set personality who still demanded polish once cameras rolled. Host and columnist Mr. FU recalled Monti directing the early QTV 11 showbiz talk show Tweetbiz with Tim Yap, Sam YG, and Maxene Magalona, later using Mr. FU's voice in a Pulupot scene, and remaining "very professional" on TV5 game and reality shows.
International and local queer cinema audiences knew him for a run of BL and LGBTQ-themed films around 2009-2011: Sagwan (2009), Brothers in Law (2009), Santuaryo (2010), Pulupot (2010), Kape Barako (2011), and The Escort (2011). Sagwan screened at Turin's GLBT film festival; Pulupot, starring former Survivor Philippines castaways Justine Ferrer and Echo Caceres, returned him to that festival the next year. Manila Times noted his reputation for LGBTQ-themed work, including Kape Barako with Johnron Tanada.
Mainstream Filipino viewers met him through GMA reality and drama. He directed Survivor Philippines seasons 1 to 3 (2008-2010) and StarStruck Season 7 (2019). Drama and anthology credits in press roundups include Misibis Bay (2013), Calle Siete (2016), Dear Uge (2018-2019), Inday Will Always Love You (2018), TODA One I Love (2019), Madrasta (2019-2020), I Can See You (2020), The Lost Recipe (2021; EN Wikipedia lists him as director of the Kelvin Miranda / Mikee Quintos fantasy romance, which later won Asian Academy Creative Awards for visual FX and editing), Las Hermanas (2021-2022), and later work such as In My Dreams and Tols. He also directed music videos for artists including Sarah Geronimo, Rachelle Ann Go, Princess Velasco, and Vice Ganda, and posted compilation reels of his commercial and music-video work on his own YouTube channel.
In October 2024 (Bandera and PEP cite 2024-10-12) he was diagnosed with colon cancer that progressed to stage 4. He spoke about it publicly in an October 2025 vlog: a doctor had given roughly one year of life expectancy; a second doctor confirmed it about three months later; nearly a year on he said he felt strong, admitted fear especially for people he might leave behind, listed bucket-list wishes (more films and series; Paris and Brazil), and stressed gratitude for the life he had. In January 2025 he posted an Instagram video seeking help with treatment costs. In April 2025 fellow director Anna Ylagan appealed for funds for urgent tumor surgery. During treatment he found crocheting meditative. In February 2026, before another surgery, he published an open letter addressed to supporters and to Audrey, naming her as the reason he kept facing the illness, admitting fear without posing as brave, and holding onto God and hope for more time. His YouTube posts about Audrey (including "Audrey is 8 now and grateful" with hashtags marking a happy child, and "Audrey's DIY Dollhouse") show Audrey, also referred to as Kate Audrey in his tags, as a child central to his private life; major obituaries do not state a formal legal relation.
He died on the morning of 2026-09-01 at his Quezon City home at age 58, after several recent surgeries, according to brother Hardy Parungao. Hardy's Facebook statement announced the death of Edgardo Puno Parungao III (Direk Monti), promised service details later, and thanked the public for prayers, love, and support. As of early September 2026, wake and funeral arrangements had not yet been formally announced in major English and Filipino press. What remained clearest was the body of work: a director who moved between jungle challenges, love-team fantasies, and intimate queer stories, and who, when illness came, refused to hide.
