In their own words

Sonu Bhaiya was not just a senior colleague or political associate to me. He was like an elder brother - affectionate, guiding and steadfastly standing by my side in every difficult time.

Hemant Soren on X, 2026-09-06

The strong pillar of Jharkhandiyat - Sonu Bhaiya - will remain forever ageless and immortal. Humble tribute.

I was reading about the 2024 bypoll campaign when I saw the news. Sonu Bhaiya helped Kalpana Soren find her voice in politics when it mattered most. Jharkhand has lost someone who believed in loyalty and in people over transactions. Rest well.

Never met him, but my daughter worked in Giridih for two years and spoke of a minister who kept no sirens, who listened. That stays with you.

A contractor who read the room, became the strategist, then the minister. Fifty-six is too young to understand your own leverage.

Early life

Sudivya Kumar was born on 26 July 1970. Published sources disagree on birthplace: Wikipedia names Giridih (then Bihar, now Jharkhand), while PTI obituaries say Dhanbad. He was the youngest son of PHED engineer Shambhu Nath. In interview he described a middle-class family of several generations of salaried employees, and said he faced taunts as a Jharkhand student while studying in North Bihar. He later worked as a contractor with Central Coalfields Limited in Giridih and with Damodar Valley Corporation before politics became full-time.

Education

Election affidavits filed with the Election Commission and compiled by MyNeta list him as 12th Pass, with Intermediate from D.S. College, Purnia, Bihar, in 1986. Secondary-school detail sometimes cited as matriculation in 1984 from C.H. High School, Tilaya (Bihar Board) appears in secondary MyNeta-related summaries; treat that school name as less firmly primary-sourced than the Intermediate declaration on the 2019…

Career and political rise

He joined the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 1989 and remained a lifelong member. After years as a grassroots organiser and district leader, he contested Giridih in 2009 (8,272 votes) and 2014 (47,517 votes) without winning, and was jailed around the 2009 nomination period. He won Giridih in 2019 and again in 2024. As MLA he pushed local infrastructure and education…

Personal life

He was married to Shweta Sharma and had three children (two daughters and one son). Cremation reporting names the son who lit the pyre as Shreyash. Family residence and commercial property declarations centre on Harsinghraydih in Giridih; the spouse also declared a flat in Ranchi. His father Shambhu Nath died in 2023. Hemant Soren and party peers treated him as…

Beliefs and views

Sonu framed his politics as loyalty to Jharkhandiyat and to the non-violent, mass-connect tradition he associated with Shibu Soren, whom he called a saint-like figure rather than a conventional politician. He criticised transactional party-hopping and commercialisation of political relationships, arguing ideological bonds should outlast blood ties. He supported women-centric welfare schemes of the Soren governments and highlighted COVID-era community kitchens…

Legacy and impact

His legacy sits at the intersection of constituency development and statewide strategy. In Giridih he is remembered for converting two decades of JMM organisational work into back-to-back Assembly wins and for bringing higher-education and civic projects to a backward district. Inside JMM he is remembered as the quiet strategist who helped Kalpana Soren enter electoral politics and who steadied the…

Awards and honours

No major national civilian awards (Padma etc.) are documented in major obituaries or Wikipedia as of this profile. Formal recognition in life was chiefly electoral and ministerial: two-term MLA, cabinet minister from December 2024, and reported Central General Secretary of JMM. After death he received full state honours at cremation and two days of official state mourning.

Controversies

Documented items: he was jailed soon after filing his 2009 Assembly nomination. Earlier MyNeta profiles show criminal cases declared in 2009 and 2019 affidavits; the 2024 affidavit lists 0 criminal cases. In March 2025 local reporting said his Facebook page (then about 24,000 followers) was hacked with obscene posts and admin access removed, with a cyber complaint filed in Ranchi.…

Death

On the night of 5-6 September 2026 Sudivya Kumar complained of chest pain at his Giridih home after dinner, was taken to Mercy Hospital around 2:15-2:30 a.m., and was declared dead around 4:00 a.m. on 6 September 2026 from cardiac arrest / heart attack at age 56. Cremation with full state honours followed the same day at Harsinghraydeeh, Giridih; son Shreyash performed last rites; CM Hemant Soren attended. Two-day state mourning: 6-7 September 2026.
