My mum played Tell Me a Poem constantly when I was growing up. Didn't know much about him then, but hearing about Zoë at Eurovision and how he helped her there... that feels like a whole life of caring for music and family. Sad to hear he's gone so suddenly.

I only learned about Christof through Zoë's music, but reading about him now I see how much he gave. A songwriter, a mentor, a father who stayed involved and believed in what his children could do. The world needed more of that.

Tell Me a Poem got me through my twenties. Didn't know him but his guitar lines meant everything to me then.

Papermoon soundtracked half my twenties in Vienna. Straub's guitar work was deceptively simple until you actually listened. The man knew how to leave space in a song, which honestly is rarer than people think.

Tell Me a Poem was the soundtrack to my freshman year abroad in Vienna. Never met him but his guitar lines stayed with me. Rest well, Christof.

What a loss. Christof shaped Austrian pop for a generation and then kept going, kept building, kept helping younger artists find their voice. That takes real character.

Grew up watching Zoë perform and always thought how involved her dad was. You could tell he really believed in what she was doing. That kind of support from a parent means everything.

Early life and education

Christof Straub was born in Vienna on 27 August 1969, the son of Ilse and Richard Straub. After the Matura he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna to study architecture. The formal training sat alongside a growing commitment to songwriting and guitar; by the early 1990s he had chosen music as his main path.

Papermoon and Austropop success

In 1991 Straub co-founded Papermoon with Edina Thalhammer. He wrote the duo's songs and played guitar while Thalhammer sang. Night After Night's Ö3 airplay led to a deal and the double-platinum debut Tell Me a Poem (1993). Hits such as Tell Me a Poem and Lucy's Eyes, gold follow-up albums, a mid-1990s lineup change, the 2004 reunion, and the 2006…

Musicals, camps and Global Rockstar

Straub developed the unproduced musical Kill And Win in the early 2000s. He founded Teenage Rockstar Entertainment (2009) and ran a Disney- and Super RTL-backed summercamp on Rügen in 2010. Global Rockstar GmbH (2014) became his digital-label venture; he also advised on Austria's Eurovision picks and supported emerging artists.

Personal life

Straub married Roumina Wilfling in 2002; they divorced in 2003. Their three children include singer and actress Zoë Straub. He later shared his life with Karin Hoffmann. He remained closely involved in Zoë's career, co-writing Loin d'ici for Eurovision 2016 and appearing with her at public events into 2026.

Death

Straub died unexpectedly on 9 September 2026 at the age of 57. His family confirmed the death in a Parte published around 13 September, saying he had been torn from life much too early. No cause of death was made public. Tributes across Austrian media remembered both the Papermoon songwriter and the father who steered a new generation of talent.

Legacy

Papermoon's early-1990s hits remain staples of Austrian soft-pop radio. Straub's later work as a label founder, Eurovision collaborator and father-producer linked that era to Zoë's generation. Colleagues and fans marked his death as the loss of a musician whose guitar lines and lyrics had given many listeners lasting emotional moments.

Awards and certifications

- Tell Me a Poem (album): double platinum in Austria - The World in Lucy's Eyes and Papermoon: gold in Austria - Amadeus Austrian Music Award 2006, Gruppe Pop/Rock national, for True Love
