Once changed how I thought about what a film could be. Simple story, true feeling. He lived that way.

Once was playing in our kitchen when my daughter was born. Now I can't hear Falling Slowly without seeing her face at the window, all that tenderness in the world at once. Glen gave us that.

Saw him busking on Grafton Street in '98. Couldn't look away. That's the mark of a real one.

He never stopped playing on the street either, even after everything. That said something.

Saw him busking on Grafton Street in 2019 and it changed something in me about what art could be. Make art. Make art. I think about that every day now.

A musician who never forgot where he came from. Galway saw him play many times, always the same generosity. Deepest condolences to his family and to Dublin.

My parents played The Frames constantly when I was growing up. His voice was just always there, you know? Like home. Reading about the crash was surreal. He seemed like someone who would just keep going forever.

Early life

Glen James Hansard was born 21 April 1970 in Ballymun, Dublin, second of six children of James (carpenter/fiddle player) and Catherine Hansard (nee Cahill). The family later lived in Killester. He attended Our Lady of Victories national school and began at Ballymun Comprehensive, leaving at 13 to busk full-time after encouragement from his headmaster. An uncle in prison gave him a guitar; he taught himself. Teen years included time in Ardclough, County Kildare, with artist Philippa Bayliss, who funded lessons at Chatham Row School of Music. Sources: Wikipedia; Guardian Denselow obituary; Irish Examiner career retrospective.

Education

Formal secondary schooling ended at 13. Musical education was practical (street busking, self-taught guitar) plus lessons at Chatham Row School of Music (now associated with Technological University Dublin) funded by Philippa Bayliss. No university degree is consistently reported in major obituaries; do not invent one. Sources: Wikipedia.

Career and discovery

Co-founded The Frames (1990); breakthrough Irish albums through the 1990s-2000s. Film: The Commitments (1991) as Outspan Foster; Once (2007) with Marketa Irglova (Oscar for Falling Slowly, 2008); later Cyrano (2021) and soundtrack work (Hunger Games, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Flag Day). The Swell Season albums with Irglova; solo albums from 2012; tours with Eddie Vedder; support for Bob…

Personal life

Relationship with Marketa Irglova (about 2007-2009) after meeting through her parents' Czech music festival when she was a child and he was in his thirties; they later clarified friendship after the romance ended. Married Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa in December 2022; son Christy born October 2022. Lived in Celbridge and Helsinki. Brothers include Gary, Richard, and Dylan (Dylan posted a…

Beliefs and views

Emphasized street-level solidarity: Christmas Eve busks for the Dublin Simon Community; Home Sweet Home / Apollo House housing protest; anti-austerity water-charge marches; 2022 Take Heart recording with Irglova and Ukrainian refugees. Artistic credo distilled at the Oscars: Make art. Bono's tribute stressed Hansard's refusal to walk past people living rough and his discomfort with stages that separated him from the…

Legacy and impact

Helped prove that a tiny Irish independent musical could win Hollywood's top song prize and still feel like a busker's story. The Frames and Swell Season catalogue, the stage musical Once, and annual Dublin busking culture all carry his imprint. Public mourning in 2026 (books of condolence, 11,000+ wake attendees, cathedral funeral livestream) showed national affection. Peers from Springsteen to…

Awards and honours

Academy Award for Best Original Song, Falling Slowly (Once), 80th Oscars (2008), with Marketa Irglova. Multiple critics' awards for the Once score/song. Grammy nominations including Best Folk Album for Didn't He Ramble (2015) and earlier Once-related categories. Laurence Olivier Award (Outstanding Achievement in Music) associated with the stage musical Once. Drama Desk recognition for lyrics. Sources: Wikipedia awards table; Oscars.org;…

Controversies

Public discussion has revisited the age gap when Hansard and Irglova first met (she was 12; romance began years later in 2007 when she was an adult). Hansard and Irglova addressed the timeline in contemporary interviews; major 2026 obituaries note the history without alleging criminal wrongdoing. Home Sweet Home's Apollo House occupation was illegal under High Court order and then…

Death

Died 29 July 2026, aged 56, in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Dublin's Strawberry Beds after a trad session at The Wren's Nest, Chapelizod, on 28 July. ATC Management announced the death; family requested privacy. Cause context: road traffic collision (motorcycle); not a long illness. Public wake 3 August 2026 at IMMA Baroque Chapel; funeral 4 August 2026 at St Patrick's Cathedral; private cremation at Mount Jerome afterward. Donations requested for Simon Community and Ukrainian Action. Sources: Wikipedia Death section; RTE; Irish Independent; Rolling Stone memorial arrangements.
