My mother used to say Laura Cardoso was the reason she believed acting was honest work. A life well spent in service of the craft.

Bixiga childhood and the fight to act

Born 13 September 1927 in Sao Paulo's Bixiga to Portuguese immigrants Adriano and Carolina Cardoso, Laurinda inventively played theatre with crates and tram costumes for her grandmother. Nuns'-school story readings fed her love of performance. At fifteen she overrode family objections to join Radio Cosmos radionovelas and adopted the name Laura Cardoso.

Informal craft school of radio and live TV

Formal drama-school credentials are not the centre of her record. Sources emphasize childhood reading at a nuns' school, teenage radio apprenticeship, live teleteatro discipline at TV Tupi, and lifelong text study. She often described herself as a worker who rehearsed and arrived at 3 or 4 a.m. when needed.

From radionovela to Globo grande dame

Radio in the 1940s, TV Tupi pioneer roles from about 1950/1952, multi-network novela career, Shell-winning theatre, and Globo permanence from the early 1980s. Signature TV: Isaura (Mulheres de Areia), Guiomar (A Viagem), Carmem (Chocolate com Pimenta), Laksmi (Caminho das Indias), Doroteia (Gabriela). Film highlights include Atraves da Janela and O Outro Lado da Rua.

Marriage to Fernando Balleroni and family

Married Fernando Balleroni in 1949 until his death from diabetes complications in 1980. Children: Fatima, Fernanda, and Jose (died at three days). Granddaughters Adriana and Claudia; great-grandson Fernando Faria became a close companion and managed her Instagram. She said she never found another love after Balleroni.

Work, aging, and a wished-for peaceful death

She rejected retirement (Nao sou a velhinha que faz trico), called herself an operaria of art, and told TV Cultura's Provocacoes (2014) she hoped to die sleeping, calling that santo, de Deus. She spoke of wanting a country with justice, equality, and peace, and of accepting aging without violence.

Builder of Brazilian dramaturgy

Among the last living links to Brazilian TV's first decade, she modelled versatility across villain, comic mother, Portuguese and Indian accents, and late-career internet-meme Doroteia. Peers, presidents, and Globo tributes framed her as a cultural monument. Official three-day mourning with Gloria Menezes underlined national stature.

Awards and state honours

Three Grande Otelo awards (cinema); five APCA prizes (TV and theatre); two Shell Awards for Best Actress; Trofeu Imprensa wins; Trofeu Mario Lago; Ordem do Merito Cultural (2006); Gramado Oscarito Trophy (2023); Globoplay Tributo (2024); Estudios Globo Walk of Fame inauguration (2025).

Controversies

No major public scandals documented in major obituaries or Wikipedia. Career notes include health interruptions on 1960s sets and a brief high-pay Record stint in 2000 chosen partly to remain in Sao Paulo.
