Early life and education

Siddeque Ahmed was born on 1 October 1962. Candidate biographies published by The Sentinel name his father as Abdul Raquib and his mother as Sirijan Khatun. Election affidavits style his father as Late Abdul Rakib.

He passed the HSLC examination in 1977 from Jafargarh Extended Higher Secondary School, Baraigram (SEBA). Affidavits later described him as an agriculturist. He married Anima Begum in 1991; they had three sons and one daughter. The family home in Baraigram / Baroigram remained central to his public identity in the Karimganj South belt, later part of Sribhumi district.

Political career

Ahmed first won Karimganj South in the 2001 Assam Assembly election as a Samata Party candidate, defeating Congress MLA Abdul Muqtadir Choudhury. In 2006 he won again as an Independent against BJP candidate Sipra Goon. He then joined the Indian National Congress and retained the seat in 2011, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Ekbal Hussain. Under Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi he…

Beliefs and politics

Ahmed presented himself as a Barak Valley and border-district spokesman focused on constituency welfare, infrastructure and minority concerns. He spoke in the Assembly on local administration and, in later years, on national issues such as the NRC as they affected Assam's Muslim belt. His relationship with Himanta Biswa Sarma, forged when both were in Congress, survived Sarma's move to the…

Controversies

On 31 March 2022 Assam Congress suspended Ahmed from primary membership for allegedly violating a three-line whip in the Rajya Sabha election by writing "One" instead of "1". Party orders cited reports from AICC co-in-charge Prithviraj P. Sathe. Ahmed denied writing "One", said he knew the procedure as a veteran MLA, and accused leadership of framing him to hide what…

Personal life

Ahmed's public and private life remained tied to Baraigram. He married Anima Begum in 1991; they had three sons and one daughter. Affidavits listed agricultural and residential holdings in the Karimganj belt and a Guwahati flat. In later years he underwent cancer treatment; interviews and political tributes recalled periods of illness and help from political colleagues, including references to treatment…

Death

After a prolonged battle with cancer, Siddeque Ahmed died at his residence in Baroigram, Sribhumi district, around 8 a.m. on 13 September 2026. He was 63. Personal secretary Sale Ahmed informed PTI. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Congress leaders including Bhupen Kumar Borah, and ministers from the ruling side issued condolences. Large crowds attended his janaza in Sribhumi. Some outlets reported the age as 64; Wikipedia and The Hindu, using the 1 October 1962 birth date, give 63.

Legacy

Ahmed left a record as a four-term Karimganj South MLA, a Gogoi-era minister for border areas, cooperation, industry and power, and a durable Barak Valley organiser whose late career tested Congress discipline. Cross-party mourning after his death underlined how personal networks in Assam often outlast formal party lines. For Sribhumi and Karimganj South, he remains a reference point in two…
