Thomas Earl Petty was born on 20 October 1950 in Gainesville, Florida, the first of two sons of Kitty Petty (nee Avery), who worked in the local tax office, and Earl Petty, a traveling salesman. He grew up in the city's Duckpond neighborhood. Music seized him early: at about age ten he met Elvis Presley on the Florida set of Follow That Dream, and he later said seeing the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show showed him a workable path into a self-contained band. Fellow Gainesville musician Don Felder (later of the Eagles) was among those who taught him early skills. Petty attended Howard Bishop Middle School and Gainesville High School, graduating with the class of 1968 (he did not walk the stage; remaining credits were completed that summer). He worked briefly on University of Florida grounds crews and as a gravedigger but did not enroll as a student.
Local bands the Epics and then Mudcrutch (with future Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench) made him a Gainesville fixture. Mudcrutch moved to Los Angeles, signed to Shelter Records, released the non-charting single "Depot Street" (1975), and split. Petty, Campbell, Tench, Ron Blair, and Stan Lynch then formed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Their 1976 self-titled debut slowly built an audience, especially in Britain, with "American Girl" and "Breakdown." You're Gonna Get It! (1978) reached the U.S. Top 40; Damn the Torpedoes (1979) went multi-platinum with "Refugee," "Don't Do Me Like That," "Here Comes My Girl," and "Even the Losers." Petty fought MCA over a contract transfer and a proposed $9.98 "superstar" list price for Hard Promises (1981), becoming a public symbol of artists' rights and fan-facing pricing. Through the 1980s the band scored with "The Waiting," "You Got Lucky," "Don't Come Around Here No More," Live Aid (1985), and Dylan's True Confessions Tour.
In 1988 Petty joined George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne in the Traveling Wilburys. The group's Vol. 1 won a Grammy; Petty's 1989 solo album Full Moon Fever (with Lynne and Campbell) delivered "Free Fallin'," "I Won't Back Down," and "Runnin' Down a Dream." Later landmarks included Into the Great Wide Open (1991), diamond-certified Greatest Hits with "Mary Jane's Last Dance," the Rick Rubin-produced Wildflowers (1994), industry critique The Last DJ (2002), Mudcrutch reunions (2008, 2016), Super Bowl XLII halftime (2008), Mojo (2010), and Hypnotic Eye (2014), the Heartbreakers' first Billboard 200 No. 1. Career sales exceeded 80 million records worldwide. The Heartbreakers entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002; Petty was MusiCares Person of the Year in 2017 and was posthumously given an honorary doctorate by the University of Florida (2021).
Petty married Jane Benyo in 1974; they had daughters Adria and Annakim and divorced in 1996. He struggled with heroin after the divorce, entered rehab in 1999, and credited Dana York with helping him seek treatment. They married in Las Vegas on 3 June 2001 (and again at home in Malibu on 21 June), with Little Richard officiating one ceremony; York's son Dylan became his stepson. An arson fire destroyed much of his Encino house in 1987. He was a fierce guardian of his catalog, blocking unauthorized political campaign uses of "I Won't Back Down" and settling amicably when Sam Smith's "Stay with Me" echoed that song.
On 1 October 2017 Dana found him in cardiac arrest at their Malibu home. He was taken to UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica and died at 8:40 p.m. PDT on 2 October 2017, aged 66, one week after the Heartbreakers' 40th Anniversary Tour closed at the Hollywood Bowl with "American Girl." A private memorial was held 16 October 2017 at the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades. In January 2018 the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled the death an accidental overdose: multisystem organ failure due to mixed drug toxicity involving prescribed opioids (including fentanyl and oxycodone), benzodiazepines, and an antidepressant, taken amid emphysema, knee problems, and a fractured hip. His wife and daughter stated the pain had become unbearable and that they believed the overdose was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident.
