My dad was a postdoc at MIT in the 80s and would talk about David Baltimore like he was a hero. I think he was. What an incredible mind and what a life spent making biology matter to the rest of us. Thoughts to his family.

My father was a virologist and kept Baltimore's papers on his desk. He said David was one of the few senior scientists who actually listened to younger people. That meant everything to him.

David Baltimore showed us that curiosity and rigour aren't in conflict with conscience. A scientist who asked hard questions and expected answers. We needed more like him.

What strikes me most is how he kept speaking up about responsibility, even when it would have been easier to just do the work and stay silent. Flew to Woods Hole one summer and understood why he loved it there. The ocean, the quiet, and still the questions.

Early life

David Baltimore was born March 7, 1938, in New York City to Gertrude (Lipschitz) Baltimore and Richard Baltimore. Raised in Forest Hills and Rego Park, Queens, he moved with his family to Great Neck, New York, in second grade. His father had Orthodox Jewish roots; his mother was atheist and later a Sarah Lawrence psychology professor. He graduated Great Neck North High School in 1956. A summer at Jackson Laboratory (Bar Harbor) introduced him to research biology and to Howard Temin.

Education

Swarthmore College, B.A. with high honors in chemistry (1960). Cold Spring Harbor Undergraduate Research Program with George Streisinger (1959). Graduate study began at MIT (1960); Ph.D. Rockefeller University (1964) with Richard Franklin. Postdoctoral training with James Darnell (MIT) and Jerard Hurwitz (Albert Einstein College of Medicine). Later honorary doctorates from many institutions including Swarthmore, Rockefeller, Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and Weizmann.
