Sir Michael John Gambon was one of the defining stage and screen actors of his generation: Irish-born, English-trained, known worldwide as Albus Dumbledore, and clearest of all when the lights rose on a stage. Born in Cabra, Dublin, on 19 October 1940 to Mary (nee Hoare), a seamstress, and Edward Gambon, an engineering operative, he moved with his family to Mornington Crescent in London's Camden borough when he was about six, after his father sought work in postwar reconstruction. His father arranged for him to be registered as a British subject, a decision that later allowed a substantive knighthood rather than an honorary one. Raised as a strict Roman Catholic, he served as an altar boy, attended St Aloysius Boys' School in Somers Town and St Aloysius' College in Highgate, then Crayford Secondary School in Kent. He left school at 15 with no qualifications.
At 16 he began an apprenticeship as a toolmaker with Vickers-Armstrongs and by 21 was a qualified engineering technician. That mechanical passion never left him. He collected antique guns, clocks, watches and classic cars, qualified as a private pilot, and later became immortalised on BBC's Top Gear when a two-wheeled corner of the test track was named "Gambon" in his honour. Acting arrived through set-building and amateur theatre, then through audacity: in his early twenties he wrote to Dublin's Gate Theatre with a CV inventing a rich stage career. The Gate hired him. He made his professional debut there in 1962 as Second Gentleman in Othello, followed by a European tour. He did not come through a conventional drama-school pipeline. The workshop and the stage were his two schools.
Laurence Olivier spotted him soon after and recruited him into the new National Theatre Company at the Old Vic, alongside future stars such as Derek Jacobi and Frank Finlay. After years of small roles (billed as "Mike Gambon"), Olivier advised provincial experience. At Birmingham Repertory Company Gambon took major Shakespeare leads including Othello, Macbeth and Coriolanus. West End comedy success in Alan Ayckbourn's The Norman Conquests (1974) and subtlety in Harold Pinter's Betrayal confirmed range. His 1980 National Theatre Life of Galileo for John Dexter was a landmark. Peter Hall called him "unsentimental, dangerous and immensely powerful," and fellow actors reportedly applauded him backstage. He could fill the Olivier Theatre, crack Ayckbourn comedy, and devastate in Pinter and Brecht.
Television made him a household name with Dennis Potter's The Singing Detective (1986), winning his first BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor as the hospitalised writer Philip Marlow. Further BAFTAs followed for Wives and Daughters (1999), Longitude (2000) and Perfect Strangers (2001). He played Georges Simenon's Maigret on ITV in the early 1990s, a prestige detective role that sat beside the Potter films in public memory. Film work included Peter Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), Robert Altman's Gosford Park (2001), Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) and Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), and Tom Hooper's The King's Speech (2010). From 2004 to 2011 he played Albus Dumbledore in six Harry Potter films after Richard Harris's death, telling interviewers he essentially stuck on a beard and played himself, and that he worked from the scripts rather than immersing himself in the novels. He also voiced Paddington's Uncle Pastuzo, appeared in the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special "A Christmas Carol," and took prestige television roles including Cranford, Emma and The Casual Vacancy. Around 1970, after The Borderers, Cubby Broccoli invited him to audition for James Bond. He was not cast.
On stage he won three Olivier Awards (A Chorus of Disapproval, 1985; A View from the Bridge, 1987; Man of the Moment, 1990), earned a Tony nomination for Broadway's Skylight, and finally played Falstaff at the National in 2005. Ralph Richardson dubbed him "The Great Gambon," a label he dismissed as a circus slogan. He was appointed CBE in the 1990 New Year Honours and Knight Bachelor in the 1998 New Year Honours for services to drama. He was invested on 17 July 1998 at Buckingham Palace. In 2017 he received an IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2020 The Irish Times ranked him No. 28 among Ireland's greatest film actors. Screen Actors Guild ensemble recognition included Gosford Park and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2. Emmy nominations came for Path to War and Emma.
He married mathematician Anne Miller in 1962. They had a son, Fergus (born 1964), later a ceramics expert on Antiques Roadshow. The couple kept homes including Gravesend, Kent, and Aldeburgh, Suffolk. From about 2000 he was also in a long-term relationship with set designer Philippa Hart, whom he met while working on Longitude, and with whom he had two sons, Tom (2007) and Will (2009), and a home in west London. When the relationship became public around 2002 he temporarily moved out, later reconciling arrangements with his marriage while remaining with Hart until his death. He was fiercely private, often answering personal questions with tall tales ("What wife?"), and preferred workshops and cars to red carpets. He disliked interviews and admitted inventing stories to survive them. Memory problems led him to leave stage work in 2015, when increasing difficulty memorising lines made theatre unsustainable and earpiece prompting did not work for him, and later to step away from some television, including Breeders. His final film credit was Cordelia (2019).
He died peacefully in hospital in Witham, Essex, on 27 September 2023, aged 82, following a bout of pneumonia, with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside. A statement issued the next day by publicist Clair Dobbs on behalf of Lady Gambon and Fergus asked for privacy. Finer clinical details were not made public. Find a Grave and secondary reports state he was cremated and that ashes were given to family or friends. A public grave site has not been made public. In 2024 reporting on his will noted that the bulk of his estate passed to Lady Gambon. Tributes from Daniel Radcliffe, J.K. Rowling, Helen Mirren, Fiona Shaw, James Phelps and the wider Harry Potter family stressed not only craft but mischief, kindness and fun. He remains the rare actor who conquered the Olivier Theatre, British television's landmarks, and global popular culture without ever seeming defined by fame.
